Understanding and coming to
terms with psychological trauma

Trauma comes in many forms and impacts people from all walks of life. It affects us physically and emotionally, and the way we see ourselves, others, and the world around us.

  • Many people experience some form of trauma throughout their lives.
  • Traumatic events occur in many forms, from accident or abuse to war or natural disaster, and they don’t need to have happened to you directly to be upsetting.
  • People can feel ashamed or guilty about having experienced trauma.
  • Following trauma, people can develop mental health problems. When this happens it is not their fault, and it does not mean they are crazy or weak.
  • Recovery from the impact of trauma is always possible, whether your traumatic experience occurred once or several times over, or whether it was yesterday or forty years ago.
