We are delighted to announce that Emeritus Professor David Dunt has joined the staff of Phoenix Australia. David is a public health specialist and epidemiologist, and an internationally recognised expert in health program evaluation.
David has authored two renowned and influential ministerial reviews. The “Dunt report”, Review of Mental Health Care in the Australian Defence Force and Transition Through Discharge and the Independent Study into Suicide in the Ex-Service Community were completed in 2009. Almost all recommendations in both reviews were accepted, with the Australian Government subsequently allocating $90 million to implement the recommendations in both the Australian Defence Force and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
David was the Founding Director of the Centre for Health Policy at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health at the University of Melbourne. The Centre for Health Policy undertakes evaluations of health policy at international, national, state and local levels, and has a substantial policy impact on government.
With experience in the evaluation of complex government health care programs, combining his epidemiological and social sciences expertise, David has evaluated and researched a wide variety of health programs and services in the fields of health promotion, health technology assessment, palliative care, and mental health.
At Phoenix Australia David will provide expert advice and support the design and development of our program of evaluation research. His expertise in both the current and ex-serving Defence communities will be of especial benefit. Director of Phoenix Australia, Professor David Forbes says that, “We have been extremely fortunate to work previously with David on a number of projects in the areas of Defence and NGO disaster support, where he provided his invaluable evaluation expertise”.
David comes to Phoenix Australia at a time when our program of evaluation is growing. While we have considerable experience in the area of military and veteran mental health, we have also worked with a range of governments, industries and organisations, evaluating policies, mental health programs and wellbeing initiatives, as well as conducting health economic evaluations.
We look forward to working with David as we further develop our program of evaluation, to advance the mental health and wellbeing of the current and ex-serving Defence communities, those exposed to occupational trauma, as well as trauma survivors and their families across the community.
David also joins the esteemed Phoenix Australia tradition of being a Bob Dylan tragic!
“I am very enthusiastic about joining Phoenix Australia, with which I have had a long association going back to the days of the Dunt Report. I am very impressed with the depth, quality and reach of the work done at Phoenix Australia, and I hope to strengthen its capacity in health program evaluation.” – Professor David Dunt
